Please note: This site covers the period that I was a Member of Parliament from May 2010 to June 2017.
Small businesses are the bedrock of our economy and vital to our economic recovery. Last year the Government presided over the largest number of business start-ups in a 12-month period in recorded history. Richard Fuller, is working hard to ensure that this trend continues, creating jobs and opportunities in Bedford and Kempston.
The MP has already launched a £400,000 local business fund which is now actively looking for local early stage businesses to support. In July, Richard has arranged a jobs event in Bedford targeted at giving young people a start, or re-start, to their working careers.
Now Richard is being the voice for small businesses and entrepreneurs at the highest levels of government.
Richard recently raised concerns in the House of Commons about bureaucracy hampering small businesses. He spoke of a constituent’s experience of dealing with Companies House:
“A constituent of mine had his form returned because it was in the wrong colour ink, and when he sought advice and guidance from Companies House he was told simply, “Look at our website.” When he re-filed to ensure that it was absolutely correct, Companies House returned it, having identified errors that it had missed first time, and then he was fined £375 and told that he was liable to prosecution for a criminal offence. I think we can do better in encouraging business.”
The Bedford MP has also been recognised for his efforts on behalf of small business by the Prime Minister, who has appointed Richard as a Small Business Ambassador.
Twelve Small Business Ambassadors have been appointed nationwide and will help promote and represent small businesses across the country and government. The new campaign will include events across the country in the coming months, as well as championing small business within government.
